Who Can Apply?
Foreign nationals above the age of 50 may retire in Mauritius under a Residence Permit. The permit is valid for 10 years and is renewable.
Financial Requirements
Applicants must provide evidence of availability of USD 24,000 per year into a local Mauritian bank account. A permit fee of USD 1,000 applies upon approval.
No Minimum Stay Required
There is no legal requirement to reside in Mauritius for a specific period. This makes the permit ideal for retirees who wish to split their time between Mauritius and their home country.
Can I Work or Invest?
The holder of a retirement residence permit may invest in any business, provided they are not employed in the business and do not derive any salary or employment benefits from it. Remote work is permitted.
Tax Benefits
Mauritius offers one of the most attractive tax environments globally: no capital gains tax, no inheritance tax, no wealth tax, and a flat income tax rate of 15%. If you spend fewer than 183 days per year in Mauritius, you are not considered a tax resident, and your foreign income will not be taxed in Mauritius.
Buying Property as a Foreign Retiree
As a foreign national, you may acquire a residential property developed under the IRS, RES, PDS or Smart City Scheme, or an apartment in a building of at least ground plus two floors (G+2). Purchasing through an approved scheme at a minimum of USD 375,000 also makes you eligible for a residence permit directly linked to the property.
How to Apply
The application is submitted entirely online through the EDB portal. Once you receive approval in principle, you must travel to Mauritius within 90 days for an in-person appointment at the EDB where your documents are verified and your permit is issued.
